After hot start, Yankees lose two in a row, evening Spring record at 2-2

The Yankees lost to the Pirates today, following a loss to the Philadelphia Phillies. Both Sabathia, Hughes and Pineda have pitched in the early stages of the season, and show promising signs of a great season to come.

                    Yankees ink veteran Raul Ibanez

                    Ibanez signs with Yankees.
The Yankees announced that they have agreed to a one year contract with veteran outfielder and DH Raul Ibanez.  Ibanez's deal is worth around $1.1 million dollars, plus incentives. The deal is pending a physical.

Ibanez grew up in the New York Metropolitan area watching the Yankees. His life dream was to play for the Yankees.  After a long successful career with the Seattle Mariners and a nice tenure with the Philadelphia Phillies, that included 2 National League Penants, Ibanez finally filled his childhood dream. At the age of 39, Ibanez looks to claim a title with the strengthened

Yankees trade AJ Burnett to the Pittsburg Pirates

Yankees trade AJ Burnett to Pirates.
AJ Burnett was traded to the Pittsburgh Pirates in exchange for two minor league players.  The Yankees also shipped $18 million dollars with Burnett. Burnett is expected to be slotted in as the 'Ace of the rotation.

UPDATED: AJ Burnett suffers orbital injury near eye; had successful surgery and expected to miss around 12 weeks.

Arbitration avoided; Yankees bring back Jones, Martin

                    Picture
The Yankees released that they have signed OF Andruw Jones and Catcher Russell Martin to one year deals, avoiding arbitration. Both deals have passed physicals, as both players are sure to be back in the Yankees' lineup for 2012. The Yankees will use Jones as a DH, right and left fielder.  Martin will catch most the games behind the plate, after creating great chemistry with CC Sabathia and AJ Burnett throughout the course of the season.

Yankees sign Brett Gardner to a 1 year deal.

                    Picture
The Yankees announced Saturday morning that they have signed outfielder Brett Gardner to a 1 year deal, worth approximately $2.8 million dollars. The speedy stud, who will turn 27 by 2012's seasons end, will presume his role in left field, along with some center field appearances when Granderson needs rest.

Gardner will be an on-and-off leadoff, 9th hole man depending on the opposing pitcher the Yankees will be facing. Gardner's numbers are pretty poor against left handed pitching, but Kevin Long, the Yankees hitting instructor, will look to fix that this Spring Training.

Yankees sign Chamberlain, Robertson; avoid arbitration

                    Picture
The Yankees announced on January 17th that they have signed relief pitchers Joba Chamberlain and David Robertson to one year deals.  With these new contracts, both players will avoid arbitration.

The Yankees are bringing back two very important pieces to their extravagant bullpen, having a closer-like reliever to pitch one inning from the sixth on; Joba in the 6th, Soriano in the 7th, Robertson in the 8th and Mariano RIvera to close the ball game out. Starters only have to give 5 good innings of pitching to get the win; wow, surpi

Yankees sign Phil Hughes to a 1 year deal

Phil Hughes signs with the Yankees.
The New York Yankees announced on Sunday that they have signed SP/RP Phil Hughes to a 1 year deal, worth approximately $3.2 Million, plus incentives. Reports claim that the deal is a $500,000 upgrade from 2011. Hughes' 2011 season was plagued with injuries and dead arms, limiting his season.  While he did play, he did not live up to expectations.  After being a star studded set up man in 2009 World Championship team, Hughes hit the bottom going 5-5 with a 5+ ERA.

But the kid is only 25 and there is much room for improvement, let alone a comeback.  Hughes has been linked to many trade rumors, specifically to the Kansas City Royals in exchange for their own 25 year old, DH/1B Billy Butler.

Yankees to acquire Michael Pineda in 4 player deal that sends Montero to M's

                    Picture
Michael Pineda has been acquired by New York.
The Yankees made headlines on Saturday.  They did not get a 27 year old stud, and did not sign Prince Fielder.  What did they do? They traded the most prized prospect in all of baseball, catcher Jesus Montero, to the Mariners, in exchange for SP Michael Pineda.  Pineda went 9-10 in 2011 with the Mariners.  The Yankees hope to slot in Pineda in the #2 or #3 spot behind CC Sabathia and Ivan Nova in their starting pitching rotation.
                    Proposed trade:
Yankees Receive: Michael Pineda, Jose Camps
Mariners Receive: Jesus Montero, Hector Noesi
Pineda is only 22, like his trade partner Montero.  He averages 98 MPH on his 4 seam fastball and will become a huge factor in this New York Yankees team.  The Yankees rotation is viewed now as follows:
                    1. CC Sabathia
                    2. Michael Pineda
                    3. Ivan Nova
                    4. Hiroki Kuroda
                    5. AJ Burnett/Phil Hughes/Freddy Garcia

                    Yankees sign SP Hiroki Kuroda

                    Picture
Hiroki Kuroda signs with the Yankees.
The Yankees announced on Saturday that they have signed former Dodger's starting pitcher Hiroki Kuroda to a one year deal.  The deal is worth between $10-$11 million dollars, pending a physical.  This was a huge signing for the Yankees. They now have a legitamite starting rotation through the first four men.

Kuroda was linked to the Boston Red Soxs.  They too were not going to give Kuroda his asking price of $13-$15 million, but the Yankees were the closer bidder, hence the winner is obvious.  Kuroda will be slotted in behind Ivan Nova as the #4 man in the rotation.

Kuroda posted decent numbers with the Dodgers in 2011. Despite being 37, Kuroda still has good stuff, throwing a mid 90's fastball along with an arsenal of breaking pitches in order to change speeds.

You have to give credit to Brian Cashman; I guess patience does "pay" off.
